Teltin Featured
In the 200th century, when we were reunited as one enormous land mass called Aeagnap, still lived mankind. The whole population centered around one particular person. This being wasn’t just a human you might stumble by. His name…TELTIN.
Teltin was very smart and active, but once he hit the age of thirteen, Teltin was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. He always complained about pains in his wrists and his lack of sleep. Once his doctor, Dr. Bridges, explained the outcomes and treatment, his life completely evolved. Unlike his friends, Teltin couldn’t play nuteraball or transimformation. He had to use a hover-cart to move around. His family wasn’t wealthy so they could not cure the situation. Teltin always looked for habits avoiding his arthritis like writing and star gazing, but found that he was only fond of one thing; science.
“Way to go again, Argina!” Jaden said sarcastically after I accidentally tripped over the restricted beam.
“Oops.” I blushed.
“It’s okay; we were going to lose any way.” Mitchell said, his hair blowing through the hot summer’s breeze. My great, great grandmother Wendy says that some of her ancestors used to have cold weather called winter, and rain that was white. I never understood how that was possible because it’s always hot in Aeagnap.
“Are you guys up for another game? The score’s pretty high! Now that we know where to go, we might be able to beat transimformation!” Jaden said scratching the leg he just recently tattooed with a dragon.
“Sorry, I have to finish my tablet assignment for Mr. Austere. How about tomorrow?” I always procrastinate, tech homework is due tonight.
“No problem. I’ll be here anytime.” Mitchell combed through his thick black hair, “How about you, Jay?”
“No can do, I have a holo-date with Fay--” He blushed bright red, “you guys can play a double without me!”
“Come on man, you know doubles aren’t fun! Let’s play Friday.” Mitchell exclaimed his decision, unleashing his husky Mexican accent. His voice always seemed to make me feel… happy, I guess.
We said our goodbyes and left.
I holo-ported home instead of taking the Hover like I usually do, I don’t know why but I’m having a bad feeling about today. It’s either that or I’m terribly hungry. Right when I holo-ported through the second access, something caught my eye. A very faint light was winking at me repeatedly. After ignoring it and walking into the arc, I ate right away. The meal was delicious! The Creator had transferred bark stew made from the last offspring of the creature they call ‘tree.’ Aeagnap was dark by the time I remembered my tablet. I really don’t want to do it. I figured I could just come up with a good excuse later.
It was hot so I sat on the windowsill. Looking outside I saw Hovers trafficking through midways, people holo-dating or gliding through the busy arcs, and that’s when I spotted it. The winking light was flashing a lot brighter in the dark and this is the only day I’ve ever seen it. It was near the center of town where the Creator was situated. I couldn’t help myself; I absolutely had to find out what was going on. I used my last deminine to holo-port to that area. And without mother’s permission, I took the porta-Hover with me.
It wasn’t very hard to follow the light near a mysteriously dark building. It had a scrawled sign with cobwebs covering it and birds’ nests sprinkled almost symmetrically, it looked as if the owner tried to cover up the words. As explained in our safety assembly, the street was abandoned, but of course that didn’t stop me from going inside. The door squeaked and creaked noisily as I opened it and walked through to explore. It was amazing, like a hallway for the palaces in our medieval holograms. On the brick floor was a red carpet seamed with glistening decorative gold that lead to a row of doorways in the far end of the antechamber. I strolled anxiously, eyeing every detail; from the paintings on the wall to the flowers held in vases. After approaching the end of the hall, I turn to open yet another door that held up a painting of two swords and a dragon; I found this portrait very peculiar. The dragon reminded me of Jaden’s new tattoo, he told me he saw it someplace but I can’t seem to remember exactly where. After thinking about it without moving for a long while, I realized it had suddenly gotten so quiet that I could hear my own heart beat. I flinched fiercely as a sudden scurry of a small rat made me lose my train of thought, so I opened the door real wide and found that it didn’t creak as much as the entrance door.
I could automatically tell that this room was a library because of the shelves occupying every wall from the ground floor to the ceiling. It was beautiful. Hard covered volumes filling every shelf, my dream come true. The creator replaced every last book with holo-tablets. My great, great grandmother told me many stories of her ancestors’ lifetimes. Once she even brought me a story book that her intimates gave to her. I read it to myself over and over again now that she died of breast cancer, they still don’t have a cure. Tears started to swell up in my eyes; I swiped them away before I heard muffled voices in the next room. As gently as possible, I swiftly slid out the door and opened the next one just a crack. I froze. I stopped breathing when I saw Mitchell sitting on a salon seat and had a large helmet with controls and buttons all around the rim. A crazy looking man with white hair sat in front of him on his hover-cart. He spoke loud and clear.
“Okay, now I’m going to ask you a couple more questions. This time do not say the answer aloud. Ready?” Mitchell nodded his head. “Number one: What are Jay’s, Fay’s, and of course, your beloved one’s full name?”
I didn’t understand what was going on until a light was blinking. It looked the exact same as the one outside. I watched in horror as the old man pressed button after button until the headgear spoke.
“Faylein Kalcy Darminal.” That was Fay’s real name. “Jaden Anthonie Megra-Smith.” I never really thought about their full names until right this moment. I wonder who—“Argina Rachél Doud”
“Fantastic! Step 1 is officially complete. Argina, would you like to come and join us?” I gasped. How can Mitchell like me? What is that old guy doing to my friend? Most importantly, how did he know I was even here? “Now I’m only asking this on account of your expression, what do you think I am doing at this very moment?”
I stuttered, still shocked that Mitchell liked me. “I-I-I think you’re, well…” I never really took that under consideration.
“Yes?” I looked at his face and realized that he had a very handsome young face aside from his crazy white hair. “Mitchell?” His helmet lifted off of his head. He was stunned to see my face as he walked this way. “Explain things to Miss Doud while I fix my ElebrutronX please?” The man’s hover-cart sped over to me. “Who do you think I am?” His eyes carefully studied my face as I answered.
“I think you’re,” I looked closely at his appearance and realized that he was in fact, “the Creator.”
“Very clever, you see, no one knows who I am besides you and lover-boy over there. Do you promise not to expose me?” Before I even motioned my head, he said, “I trust you. Feel free to look around as much as you like. I have many experiments not yet used in the modern world. Be careful though, some aren’t tested.” He walked out of the room through a back door that I’ve never noticed. My eyes lingered around the vast area. Test tubes, measuring materials, and buttons scattered all across the room on the floor and on top of counters. I looked towards the corner of the room and found something that caught my interest. A large egg was being heated by a glass case. It was slightly taller than I was and had a creamy smooth texture. I walked over to it and reached out my hand.
“I wouldn’t touch that if I were you.” Mitchell said behind me, making me flinch. “If your skin even goes near it, well… you really don’t want to know.” He nervously scratched behind his head. “If you want, I can show you what it’s for.”
“Sure! Is it an egg?”
“Kind of, but not really. There’s a heck of a lot more to it than that!” He assured, walking me over to an elevator. I stepped in and noticed it was made of pure glass. I guessed he noticed my gaze because he explained, “Pretty sweet, ain’t it? Me and Big C came up with it for houses, but of course, where’s the privacy?” We both laughed. He touched a monitor that jutted out of the clear wall. After a few seconds of him pressing buttons and shifting controls, we finally started moving. We were moving sideways. I looked out of the crystal glass and saw never ending walls down below. We were moving diagonally into the earth. In the near distance, a dim light uncovered a brown cave entrance. Right when we stopped my head was throbbing hard. Mitchell turned to me. “It hurt the first time for me too. Very painful, but it’ll wear off.” Relieved at that statement, I hopped out of the cart.
“It’s so pretty!” No lie. Lights filled every gap in the tunnel making it look more like a dance floor than a cave.
“Look over here!” He said pointing to the largest screen, “When you’re ready, press the shift button.”
I pressed it right away. Two arm-like machines shifted out of the large panel and placed a pair of sunglasses on my face. I looked around although all I saw was darkness. Just then an empty room popped up on the screen and the only thing in that room was the Creator in his hover-cart.
“Hello, Argina, my name is Teltin and I will be your host this subject. Would you like to move on?” I tried to say yes anxiously, but all that came out was my breath. “Okay. I know that you are interested in the reason why an enormous egg was doing in my lab, so I am here to tell you. You see, millions of centuries ago lived a creature called the dinosaur. They were known to be vicious and deadly, though not even one human lived to see them. People either forgot about them or still believe they are extinct. Of course, these pathetic brains can’t think outside of the box. Once they think they’re finished, they are.” He cursed something under his breath. “But me, I went and took test after test and found extraordinary results! It turns out; these dinosaurs actually live deep underground because of the rapid-consolidating volcanic reaction that took place. They are fighting the thick layer of crust so they can eat food and breathe fresh air. If they accomplish this, they will become the dominating creature and we will no longer get to live. Thanks to me and lover-boy, we have a way to preven—no, stop this from becoming too strong. We cannot prevent this from occurring because of the fact that the volcanic rock is impossible to get through. It’s up to you, Mitchell, Jaden, and Faylein. Mitchell and I have gone through the instructions plenty of times. He will explain to you soon. I appreciate your help! And remember, time is wasting, so please be careful!” The helmet released off of my head and when I focused my eyes, I saw Mitchell standing straight in front of me. His face was gratifying.
“We don’t have much time to waste. I already yanked it into their brains.” He smirked, looking beside me. I turned to see Jaden and Fay holding their heads up like it was about to fall off. “Their pain will probably last for a few hours. At least they know—why are you looking at me like that?” I flinched.
“Like what?” I bluffed.
“You were just staring at me with dreamy eyes.” I couldn’t help looking into his. He smiled real wide.
I spoke without thinking. “Well that’s because you have dreamy eyes.” I blushed redder than a tomato. We stared at each other for a second. His eyes were a magnificent purple-blue color and his features were beautiful, including his beige skin and a sweet smile.
“AHEM!” We both turned simultaneously. Jaden was waving his hand so we can come into the elevator.
Mitchell told us exactly what do and exactly when to do it. He left out little or no detail. It was crazy! He said not to come in the way of the dinosaurs unless you would like to die. He said to cautiously distract the animals with the holographic dinosaurs they made. He showed us the remote that controls the hologram: there was a green button to make the dinosaur talk (they studied their language!), a giant red button to make the dinosaur appear/disappear, two switches to make the creature walk front to back and side to side, and a purple button, which I find funny, makes the dinosaur dance! We practiced over and over until we actually had to change the battery.
“I think you guys are ready. Now it’s time to get out there and become heroes!” Mitchell exclaimed; his eyes wide and anxious and grin impossibly extensive.
“Um… what do we do after the dinosaurs find out it’s just a fake?” Jaden said; his expression filled with curiosity.
“Don’t worry about that, I got it covered!” Mitchell was definitely looking at the glass case that held the giant egg. “Now all we have to do is wait.”
Hours went by. The only thing keeping us awake was fear and anxiety. Mitchell left the television on just in case the news cast unlikely found out before us. We waited and waited until Fay suddenly stood up.
“I’m out of here! I didn’t choose to do this. I don’t want to do this. I actually think this is ridiculous! You guys can go ahead and wait for your deaths to stumble by! I’m not!” It was obvious that she was just scared for her life, but I’ve never heard her speak louder than a whisper before. Jaden stood as well and hugged Fay while whispering persuasive words into her ear. She unwillingly sat down.
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! BANG! BOOM!
“It’s time!” Mitchell said jumping onto his feet in a flash and then reaching out to help me up. “I’ll show you your positions.”
He walked us onto the roof of the building and showed us each to a bridge that ended way up high in the sky. I went on the one to the left, Jaden on the right, and Fay right in the middle. There was a stand to place my control on top of. It was a beautiful view. I’m glad I’m no younger than fifteen; when I was little, I was afraid of heights and was very clumsy. I leaned way over the edge of the rail to get a good look at the animals. I stumble over after an enormous figure hopped ferociously underneath me. The creature shook the ground enough to make me fall over the rail. I was calm as I reached my end until something grabbed me from above. It was tugging my arm, trying to pull me up. I looked over the mist of clouds and saw Mitchell holding a humongous grappling stick that clutched to my elbow. As I reached the top, I tumbled over the rail landing on top of him. He looked worried.
“Is there anything wrong? Are you okay?” He asked.
“I’m fine, I’m fine! Now help me up.” Mitchell stood me up and sudden pain inflicted on my right leg. I jerked hard. I felt an arm swoop me up and realized he was cradling me like a baby.
“No you’re not. I don’t think you’ll make it. Come back to the roof, maybe Big C has a pair of crutches. You know how he’s always prepared!”
“Okay, but I refuse to not help on this extremely important mission.”
Of course, Teltin had a pair of crutches waiting for us hanging off of a wall. I got used to the way it worked and staggered around outside. Mitchell helped me, but it wasn’t as easy as it looked.
“Thanks.” I said for the fifth time after Mitchell assisted me.
“No problem! Isn’t that what friends do?” Mitchell walked me back to my station. “Wait five minutes and then press the big red button. Don’t forget, I’ll go tell Jay.”
He handed me his watch and walked off. I watched it patiently, waiting for the exactly perfect moment… 5-4-3-2- I pressed the button with all my heart and saw the beautiful brown dinosaur. My one was called the brachiosaurus. It has a long skinny neck, with a huge body. I was glad my one didn’t attract the carnivores. Instead it attracted the herbivores; some with crests, long noses, or scaly bodies, others with long tails, armored plates, and horns all over their head. Each and every one of them looked beautiful. I couldn’t help but gawk at their wide variety in color. Then suddenly, a hand from behind me pushes the green button, making the dinosaur speak. On my control’s monitor, it translated the yelling sounds. ‘Listen to me! We are all supposed to stop. The humans are our friends. We shouldn’t destroy their homes just because we wanted to. Now sit and be patient while I think of how to punish you for killing all of these innocent people!’ I looked out into the crowds of creatures. Every single one of them obeyed the commands. It looked like a wave. The first row sat down, then the next one, and then the next. It was magnificent. I saw the biggest herbivore stand up stomping its heavy legs. It wailed out a few oooaaahhhh’s. I had exactly NO idea what it said, but it made all of the others stand and stomp around. Some ran around, knocking over buildings and wailing out loud. I couldn’t hear myself think. All of a sudden, out of the blue, I see a crested herbivore charging towards me. I thought it was my imagination, but then I realized that I didn’t have an imagination. The hand that recently pressed the green button safely pushed me to the side. It made the dinosaur ram into the bridge and me to collapse on the roof. My right side was hurting even worse than before. Aching in pain I looked up to see Mitchell holding the hologram up thinking really hard to himself. These animals were going crazy and we had nothing to do. I looked to the right of the roof and saw that the carnivores were going bananas as well. I started to cry. Jaden was running around hollering.
“I’m too young to die!” Jaden said tugging at his hair. “I’m way too young to die! I’m not going to die. I’m just imagining things, so when I pinch myself—OUCH!” He was going ballistic, worse than a girl. I wish I had a camera, if we lived long enough to watch it and laugh.
“PURPLE!” Someone yelled from behind. “THE PURPLE BUTTON, PRESS THE PURPLE BUTTON!”
It didn’t take me long to react. I ran towards Mitchell and press the button with all my might. I forgot what it was supposed to do until the dinosaur started to obey his command. The dinosaur started to dance like Michael Jackson (a prehistoric human know to dance.). All of the others followed unexpectedly. I was shocked and amused at the same time. Jaden’s side was under control as well and we all started laughing.
“Mitchell?” I asked realizing something completely etched out of my mind.
“Yes?” He answered with a smug face, thinking that he saved the world one handed.
“Um… I don’t know how to ask this without making you freak out. Where’s Faylein?” His face dropped. We all ran to her bridge and looked down. There was no sign of her. Then suddenly I heard laughing. I looked up at where Mitchell pointed. Fay was riding a triceratops that was getting his groove on. It looked hilarious. But then I heard loud cries, louder than any human’s voice.
“I got to go!” Mitchell said sprint away at full speed.
I looked down again to see the garage of the building open. The egg was being wheeled out by Mitchell but I saw that it was cut messily in half. The other half was on top of it, concealing what was inside. Mitchell looked up, smiled really big, and focused on what he was doing. He reached his gloved arms out and swiftly lifted the top off. Everyone was awkwardly quiet. Whatever Teltin and he planned seemed to be working. Lying inside of the bottom of the egg was a baby dinosaur. Mitchell went inside and closed the garage door. I waited to see what happens. In just seconds, I hear Mitchell breathing beside me. I looked down again and saw the baby waddle out of his egg. Slowly but noticeably, the dinosaur grew bigger and bigger, until it was larger than the brachiosaurus. It howled angrily at the other dinosaurs. I was afraid that it would turn around and rebel against us. As I watched carefully, the dinosaur roared making everything flinch, including me.
“That’s the king. He’s called Tyrannosaurus Rex. That's why they listen to him, like a president or something.” Mitchell said, eyebrows pulled together watching them even more carefully than I was.
I couldn’t help but ask. “How do you know he won’t turn on us?”
“Remember the glass chamber he was in?”
I nodded my head.
“Big C attached tubes to it so the chemicals can get fused into his brain, making him act on what Big C’s telling him. It’s called telepathy.”
I turn around and see Teltin sitting on his hover-cart closing his eyes shut tight, fingers pressing into his temples.
I look back down, making sure I didn’t miss anything. Fay was off of the dinosaur’s head. II wondered if she knew what was happening. The dinosaur walked towards the middle of the large group. He leaned forward jutting his tail wide out, reaching the outside of this oval-circle. His head was stretched out far as well, his mouth opened wide, rows and rows of razor sharp teeth he had were innumerable like that of a shark’s. Before I even knew it, the Tyrannosaurus Rex spun violently in one complete circle. He hit almost all of the dinosaurs in his surroundings. Only one was left; a brachiosaurus. The Tyrannosaurus charged forward, hitting the brachiosaurus to dust without breaking a sweat. I gasped.
“What happened to all of them?” I asked anxiously.
“Oh! I didn’t tell you?” He asked like it was the most important thing in the world.
I shook my head.
“I could’ve sworn I did. That was the most important part!” He shook his head even more. “How could I’ve—“
“WILL YOU TELL ME ALREADY?” I interrupted, accidentally adding too much rudeness to my voice.
He cleared his throat. I tapped my fingers impatiently.
“The dinosaurs are really, really, really, really, really, really—“
“Okay! I get the point!” I looked at him. “Sorry, go on.”
“They are extremely old, and when studying them, Big C found out that they turn to dust when they hit something hard like the volcanic rock, or each other.”
“That’s it?”
“Nope, we needed something big and hard, like a big huge dinosaur that was willing to cooperate with us. Even if that did happen, if it hit them, it would turn to dust too. You might think that that was okay, but what would we do with all the dust on the ground? So we came up with a great plan. Big C took some samples of genes of the strongest dinosaurs that were underground and mixed them with chicken DNA.”
“Chicken DNA?”
“Yup, chickens descended from the mighty T-Rex so we thought it was a perfect plan. I thought it was perfect to get their leader to lead them into a trap. We made sure to give it a weak point though, so we could destroy it later when the time came.”
“What will the dinosaur do to help since it’s still alive?” I couldn’t think of an answer to that.
“No problem, the T-Rex eats all of the dust. He eats it because it’s just like meat. You might think it’s gruesome, but I think it’s pretty fascinating. I might even call it cool!”
“GROSS!”
Looking away from the disgusting image, I saw Teltin talking to—OH MY GOSH! I ran as fast as I could to the crying woman.
“Mom!” I cried out, hugging her with all my might.
She hugged me back, but not before telling me off. “How could you do this to me? I was worried sick! I can’t believe you would do this to your mother! Do you know how long you were gone? Do you know how many times I walked around town calling out your name? I couldn’t even take my porta-hover because someone here took it without asking! And then I found you here, where some enormous ferocious creatures could’ve gobbled you up! What if something happened to you? What would I do then? Huh?”
“Mom, I’m okay, I’m right here. I love you mom!”
“Oh, honey, I love you too. It’s just that I was worried sick, I didn’t want to lose the one thing I care about most.”
“I missed you mom. I’m so sorry; I’ll never do it again. I’ll take any punishment, you can ground me, kick me out, throw me in a dumpster, or whatever. Can I just go home?”
“Of course you can come home. The house is so empty without you.”
“Ahem!” I heard Mitchell.
“Oh, mom, this is Mitchell. He’s one of the kids I play transimformation with. He saved my life, TWICE!”
My mom ran over to him and kissed both of his cheeks, like, thirty times. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! How will I ever be able to repay you?”
“Don’t worry about it. I got what I wanted.” He winked at me.
I blushed. Mom didn’t see; she was too busy kissing me on the forehead.
“Come on sweetie! Let’s go home.” As I walked away, I realized I had a story that I could tell my descendants. Me, a normal fifteen year old girl that saved the world…. Okay! HELPED save the world.
